FRSC Zonal Commandant Pays Courtesy Visit to University Management

The Zonal Commandant (Logistics) of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in-charge of Benue and Nassarawa Command, Commandant Ayobami Omiyale on Monday, 6th May, 2019 paid a courtesy call on the University Management at Main Campus, Ago-Iwoye. On the Zonal Commandant’s team were the Sector Commandant, Ogun State Command, Clement Oladele; Acting Unit Commandant, Ijebu-Ode, Route Commandant Adesina; Ago-Iwoye Unit, Clement Akpenuan; and Divisional Crime Officer, Ago-Iwoye Police Division, DSP Patrick Umar.

Receiving the team in his office, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde expressed appreciation over the visit of such high profile officers of the Corps in spite of their busy schedule. This, he said, was not unexpected from the former Sector Commandant of Ogun State Command whom he described as a jolly good fellow, adding that the Commandant did not only join other past sector commandants in facilitating the long standing cordial relationship existing between the Corps on the one hand and the University on the other, but preferred to continue to sustain it. These sterling qualities of Commandant Omiyale, the Vice-Chancellor attributed to how the University as an entity along with its staff members had over time, distinguished itself as part of the road users in the Command, especially, in terms of training of its staff members. He disclosed that as part of the standard practice of the University in the area of safety and security of lives and property within and outside the campuses, the University would always partner with appropriate and competent institutions including the FRSC to handle training and seminar for its members in such fields. He gave an instance where the University recently organized a 3-day Workshop for its drivers on “Fundamentals of Road Safety Practices”, in which the resource persons were mainly from the Road Safety Corps, The Nigeria Police, and VIO Section of the Transport Ministry in the State.

Giving a brief on the new development in the University, Prof. Olatunde disclosed that apart from the fact that about 99 percent of the academic programmes being offered in the University had NUC Full Accreditation Status, the University had in place effective measures for safety and security of lives and properties on its campuses. He emphasized that the management has zero tolerance for indecent dressing, indiscipline, and cultism. “The management’s tough stance had been yielding results as there was no cult attack on any of the campuses in the last two years, while the town-gown relationship with the host communities had also been of great assistance in that respect”, said the Vice-Chancellor.
Speaking further, Prof. Olatunde who also admonished parents not to abandon their wards after matriculation, implored them to ensure that their children were accommodated within the school hostels, as the University now has safe and decent hostel facilities on virtually all the campuses. He then reassured the visitors of the safety of the students and promised to ensure an uninterrupted and stable academic calendar.

Responding on behalf of the team, the elated Zonal Commandant, Ayobami Omiyale, who could not hide his feelings on the warm reception and honour the University Management accorded him and his team, congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on his appointment as the helmsman of the institution. He disclosed that he was impressed with the spate of developmental projects that were visible all over the campus, adding that the new aesthetic look the University wears was a clear testimony of the commitment and leadership capacity of the Vice-Chancellor. Commandant Omiyale who was also accompanied by his wife and some of his family members including his daughter, who is an undergraduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for instilling discipline among students, especially, in the area of zero tolerance for cultism, indecent dressing, and brigandage. He thereafter promised, on behalf of the Corps, to continue to liaise and partner with educational institutions including the Olabisi Onabanjo University in actualising the Corps quest for a ‘Safe Motoring Environment in Nigeria’.

It would be recalled that Commandant Ayobami Omiyale was once in Ogun State Command as the Sector Commandant before being posted out for higher responsibilities within the rank and file of the Federal Road Safety Corps as the Zonal Commandant (logistics) in charge of Benue and Nassarawa Commands. It is also worthy of note that the FRSC Special Marshal team of Olabisi Onabanjo University led by Mr. Kehinde Adeyemi was also part of the visit to the Management.
