Brief History

The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye is part of the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences (OACHS).  The faculty, which is located in Sagamu Campus of the University, formerly has eleven Departments; Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Nursing, Chemical Pathology and Immunology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Medical Microbiology, Parasitology, Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology, as well as the newly created Medical Laboratory Science and Forensic Science departments.

All these departments offer degree programmes, namely; BSc. Anatomy, BSc. Biochemistry, BSc. Nursing, BSc. Pharmacology, BSc. Physiology, BSc. Medical Laboratory Science and BSc. Forensic Science except four (Chemical Pathology and Immunology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Medical Microbiology, Parasitology, Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology) which now form the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences. The departments in the faculty also run postgraduate programmes for the award of Postgraduate Diplomas, Master of Science and PhD degrees. The curricula of the departments integrate the teaching of relevant courses and research for the award of the various degrees.  Research facilities in the faculty have improved tremendously in recent times with the procurement of additional equipment for all the departments and establishment of well-equipped Central Research laboratory for the University.

Our commitment is to identify and meet the present and emerging health and industrial challenges of Nigeria in particular and the world at large through vigorous creative and innovative research.
