Management of Olabisi Onabanjo University under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde has been commended for the use of the funds released to the University under the Federal Government 2013 Intervention for Public Universities in Nigeria. This commendation was given in the exit report of the NEEDS Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) team led by Comrade (Engr.) Sani Suleiman during its visit to the University between Sunday, 17th and Tuesday, 19th February, 2019 to assess the level of implementation of the 2013 NEEDS Assessment Projects as a sine-qua-non for the release of the 3rd and final tranche of the intervention fund by the IMC.
Welcoming the team to the University, the Vice-Chancellor thanked the Federal Ministry of Education and Tetfund for their show of love and interests in the development of the University through regular provision of funds for projects/equipment and capacity building of the University workforce. While re-assuring the team of the University’s readiness for the assessment of the recently completed projects in the University under the sponsorship of the 2013 NEEDS Assessment Intervention by the Government, the Vice-Chancellor implored Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, the current ASUU National President, whom he described as a fellow Comrade. He, therefore, emphasised that the IMC team was in the University to monitor projects implemented on NEEDS Assessment Intervention Fund in terms of quality, quantity and level of adherence to the underlining principles of the project implementation. The outcome of the team”s visit according to the Comrade Engineer was intended and expected to facilitate the quick release of the 3rd and final tranche of the total disbursement to the University.
Presenting the detailed report to the Management of the University after an extensive on-the-spot assessment of all the projects situated at different campuses of the University including Ibogun Campus, Ayetoro Campus, Sagamu/Ikenne Campus, and the Main Campus, the IMC team members did not mince words in expressing their satisfaction on their experiences at various project sites.
They, however, gave their professional advice where necessary and reassured the management and the BMC that the 3rd and final tranche would be facilitated following the impressive outcome of the monitoring exercise. Other members of the IMC team included Engr Hassan Yakasai, Engr. Akin Jimoh Bello, and the Secretary, Ms. Ulonna Inyamma to the team. The Chairman of the team, Engr. Suleiman , thereafter congratulated the Management on the success recorded in the project implementation. He specially mentioned some distinguishing qualities seen in virtually all the projects evaluated like good structural integrity, provision of adequate convenience/toilet facilities for the students and good maintenance culture.
Commenting on the exit report presented by the IMC team, Prof. Olatunde thanked the team for their objective assessment of various projects and promised to sustain the standard in subsequent ones. He reassured the team that construction of 30 toilet facilities for staff and tudents’ uses, which were nearing completion, would also boost the convenience status on the campuses. The toilets projects under construction, according to the Vice-Chancellor were also part of the recent special intervention from Tetfund.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2012, in response to the agitation of the University Staff Unions on the decay and dilapidated state of infrastructure in Nigerian public universities initiated a Needs Assessment Survey to ascertain the level of decay of existing facilities in both Federal and State Universities, and also identify the choice needs of every institution. In view of the outcome of this investigation into the pressing needs of the public universities, a Needs Assessment Intervention for Public Universities in Nigeria was instituted in 2013, and the funds were released to various Universities in three tranches. It is in the light of this that Olabisi Onabanjo University got the first and second tranches of the intervention and awaiting the final tranche.
Present at the IMC report presentation to the Vice-Chancellor were members of the University Management, Budget Monitoring Committee, and other University functionaries.
