Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering is the latest addition to the present four (4) Departments under the Faculty of Engineering in the College of Engineering and Environmental Studies of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ibogun Campus.

The curriculum of the Civil Engineering programme is designed to provide students with the opportunity to prepare for specialized professional career. This curriculum leads to the honours degree of Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, normally, at the end of five years. The programme also provides solid academic background, upon which more advanced degrees could be built, if so desired. Department of Civil Engineering places much emphasis on the necessary balance in Classroom-Laboratory-Industrial training of engineers.

Department of Civil Engineering has seasoned academics that have excelled globally in their relevant areas of specialization. Larger percentages of the academic and Technical staff have already made their marks in various industrial capacities and are duly registered professionally with learned bodies like the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN will be employed.

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

The Civil Engineering Programme at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ibogun Campus will provide undergraduate students with strong, broad-based, engineering education which gives them the basic intellectual and organization skills that allow them to work with complex systems with technological, social and environmental components. As many of the programme’s graduates begin work upon graduation in industry or with governmental organizations, the curriculum is designed to prepare students for these roles by requiring a number of courses in the various fields of Civil Engineering and by providing limited specialization in one given area. The curriculum is designed to encourage lifelong learning and to prepare students for undertaking advanced studies in engineering or in other professional areas.

Undergraduate students can receive a general civil engineering education or become fairly specialized in one of several areas including environmental engineering, hydrology and water resources, geotechnical engineering, pavements, structures, or transportation.

  AIMS/OBJECTIVES

Training of graduates in Civil Engineering at the Olabisi Onabanjo University will specifically take account of the following:

(i)         Provision of broad based academic and practical training to achieve mastery in Civil Engineering concepts of design, construction, installation, machine operation and service, marketing, consultancy, research and development.

(ii)        Equipping the graduates with enough basic principles of Civil Engineering Services required to cope with the current industrial status of the country.

(iii)       Harnessing of Water resources and conversion into varieties of intended end-use.

(iv)       Production of high level man-power capable of working independently through self-employment as well generating employment for the unemployed.

(v)        Training individual in the standard engineering practices as applicable to the modern techniques; formulating solutions to the various industrial, manufacturing, and service delivery problems prevalent in our society.
