Staff Sports Association Resuscitated

The Management of Olabisi Onabanjo University has restated its commitment towards ensuring that sports and sporting activities among staff and students in the University were given its required attention and its rightful place in the action plan of the institution either as a vocation or means of achieving physical fitness. The hint was dropped by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. (Mrs.) Ebun Oduwole, who was representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde, on Wednesday, 12th April, 2019, at the Sports Complex of the University during the flag-off of the monthly walk exercise. This April 2019 edition of the monthly health walk witnessed the resuscitation of the Staff Sports Association with the unveiling of a special sports wear by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) to the admiration of the staff who were already in high spirit for the exercise.

In her speech, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor who was dressed in the new Sports Association kit along with other staff of the University disclosed that the resuscitation of the Association was long overdue considering the unusual period of its inactivity and the attendant gain of the coming together as a group of sports men and women for physical fitness and health benefit. She, thereafter, implored every member of staff of the University whom she said were potential members of the Association, to ensure their unwavering commitment towards the monthly exercise.

Prof. (Mrs). Oduwole who also brought the goodwill message of the Vice-Chancellor was full of gratitude to the University’s helmsman for his love for sports and enviable commitment to sports development in the University. She reiterated the plans of the University authority to commit a sum of N150,000,000.00 for an urgent intervention in the Sports section of the University, especially, the completion of the Sports Complex.

Also speaking at the event, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Deji Agboola who was dressed in a sports track suit and trainers, commended the staff of the University for the exercise which he described as very challenging but rewarding on the health and physical fitness of every regular participant. Prof. Agboola further enjoined all to exercise regularly because it could be of help against some silent killer diseases like High Blood Pressure (Hypertension), Obesity, and Arthritis.  In their separate contributions at the end of the Health Walk, the Registrar and the University Librarian, Mr. Femi Ogunwomoju and Dr. Adebambo Oduwole respectively, threw their weight behind the monthly exercise and congratulated the entire members of staff for their supports and co-operation towards the co-ordination of the activities that culminated in the successful resuscitation of the Staff Sports Association. They, therefore, agreed with the schedule of the monthly exercise which had been fixed for every second Wednesday of the month.

It would be recalled that the monthly health walk was initiated years back in OOU to among other objectives provide and encourage a regular means of achieving physical fitness for staff members with attendant good health in a  safe environment. It commences with every participant’s blood pressure check, weight measure and other health checks by the Medical Health Personnel from the Directorate of Health Services between 7.30am and 8.00 a.m, prior to the 1.5 Km Walk. This health walk is followed with several physical exercises at the Sports Centre Outdoor Game Pitch under the supervision of Sports instructors from the Centre.
