OOU Holds International Conference on Yoruba Nation and Politics

An International Conference with the theme, “The Yoruba Nation and Politics since the 19th Century” will take place at OGD Lecture Theatre, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye from Monday, 9th October, to Wednesday, 11th October, 2017.

According to the Chairman, Local Organizing Committee and Dean, Faculty of Arts, Professor Dipo Olubomehin, the event is in honour of late Professor Joseph Adebowale Atanda who was a distinguished historian and scholar whose expansive and extensive scholarship about the Yoruba of West Africa provided for posterity a corpus of work that remains indelible and invaluable to all who seek knowledge about the Yoruba, as well as about the foundations of the Nigerian nation as a whole.

Olubomehin stated further that the family of the late scholar and the University of Texas at Austin, USA are in partnership with OOU to host the International Conference.  The Local Organizing Committee Chairman added that the long awaited historic anthology of Professor Atanda’s works entitled “The Collected Works of J. A. Atanda” compiled by the celebrated historian, Professor Toyin Falola of the University of Texas Austin, USA would be launched at the occasion.

DR TUNJI OLAOPA

Dr. Tunji Olaopa, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy would give the keynote address at the event while Professor Chris Ogbogbo, President, Historical Society of Nigeria would be the book reviewer. The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ganiyu Olatunde is expected to be the Chief Host.

 

The Conference will cover key themes in politics, identity, cultural regeneration, internal and external relations, transnational influence and enduring impact on global and local politics and society amongst several other themes.

 

The programme is scheduled to start by 9.30am and will be graced by distinguished scholars, eminent personalities and well meaning Nigerians from all walks of life.
