Excellence in Legal Advocacy at the 2025 Olu Asekun National Moot Court Competition

From 2 to 4 June 2025, the Faculty of Law at Olabisi Onabanjo University proudly hosted the second edition of the Olu Asekun National Moot Court Competition, a prestigious event aimed at enhancing legal advocacy and professional development among Nigeria’s brightest law students.

Held at the Olu Asekun Law Resource Centre, a purpose-built facility established through the generous endowment of Dr Olusegun Olu Asekun, this national competition has grown into a respected platform for rigorous legal training and the cultivation of ethical courtroom practice. The event underscores our commitment to nurturing critical legal skills and professional discipline within the next generation of lawyers.

This year’s edition witnessed the participation of law students from eight leading universities across the country. Over three days, participants demonstrated exceptional legal reasoning and advocacy skills, arguing complex hypothetical cases in various areas of law, including constitutional law, criminal procedure, environmental law, and human rights. Each round was adjudicated by seasoned legal practitioners, academics, and jurists, ensuring that all proceedings reflected the highest standards of legal practice.

The competition reached its peak on 4 June with an intense final round that featured compelling oral submissions and well-researched written memorials. The performance of all participants was commendable, reflecting months of preparation, teamwork, and commitment to excellence. Notably, the final day served as a remarkable exhibition of the talent, discipline, and innovation that our legal education system continues to produce.

Beyond the awards and accolades, the Olu Asekun National Moot Court Competition serves a greater purpose. It bridges the gap between theoretical legal studies and practical courtroom application. It encourages collaboration, intellectual rigour, and professional etiquette. It also provides a national stage for young advocates to grow in confidence and competence.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Dr Olusegun Olu Asekun for his sustained commitment to legal education and to the future of the legal profession in Nigeria. His vision and support continue to make a profound impact not only on Olabisi Onabanjo University, but on law faculties across the country. We also commend the Faculty of Law, the Law Students’ Society Judicial Council, and the entire organising committee for their outstanding coordination and hospitality throughout the event.

As we reflect on the success of this second edition, we look forward to building upon the strong foundation laid so far. The Olu Asekun National Moot Court Competition remains a vital part of our mission to produce law graduates who are not only academically sound but also professionally equipped to lead in legal practice, policy, and public service.

We remain committed to excellence. We remain committed to justice. We remain committed to shaping the future.
