The National Zonal Director, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), South West Zone, Mr. Rapheal Akpan has led a powerful team from his zone to Olabisi Onabanjo University on Friday, 28th June, 2019. The team which included the Chief Monitoring Officer, Mr. Tajudeen Ibraheem, the Assistant Chief Monitoring Officer, Mrs. Sherifat Mohammed-Kuro and the State Officer, Abeokuta, Mrs. Bosede Williams were received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Admin), Professor (Mrs.) Ebun Oduwole on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Main Campus, Ago-Iwoye.
While receiving the team, Professor Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde welcomed the Zonal Director and his staff to Olabisi Onabanjo University and profusely thanked them for considering the University a worthy place to visit and, most especially, its Radio Station. He made a special appeal to the team for an increase in the coverage area allotted to the University Radio Station. Professor Ganiyu Olatunde requested for a wider coverage so that OOU students in Sagamu, Ayetoro and Ibogun would have an opportunity to tune in and listen to the station. According to him, “the world is now a global village. It is assumed there shouldn’t be any restriction as long as we follow due process”. He revealed that the Radio Station was built and donated to the University by Sir Kessington Adebutu. He added that the Radio Station has always been a pride of the University and its importance in disseminating information to students and serving as a training ground for them cannot be over emphasized. Professor Olatunde disclosed that the University has employed two ex-students as staff of the Radio Station and had also sponsored some staff of the station on conferences and workshops in the past. He commended the staff from the Mass Communication Department for the professional tips and guidance being given to the staff of the Radio Station. He asserted that the Station was the baby of Mass Communication Department. Thereafter, the Vice-Chancellor sought for the assistance of NBC, especially in the provision of technical assistance and acquisition of additional broadcasting equipment to further enhance the quality of the station’s transmission.

In his response, the NBC, Zonal Director, thanked the University Management for the opportunity of the visit. He remarked that he felt it was important for him to visit all the broadcasting stations within his area of jurisdiction in the South West Zone. He added that he considered OOU Radio Station as one of the very important and strategic community Radio Stations that he should visit and see how it was fairing. On the request of the wider coverage raised by the University, Mr. Akpan promised to look into it but suggested that the matter would receive better attention if raised at the oncoming National Conference for Community Radio Stations slated for Kano in August. He, therefore, affirmed that NBC would assist OOU Radio Station by deploying its technical capacity whenever it was necessary to do so. He sent his greetings to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde and said that he would love to meet him during his next visit to the University.
The NBC team was accompanied to the Vice-Chancellor’s Office by the Head of Department, Mass Communication, Dr. Dele Odunlami and a staff from the Department, Dr. Lanre Akinola.
