Dean Recommends Minimum of One Year Maternity Leave

Nursing mothers all over Nigeria might have a cause to jubilate if the government of the day accepts and implements the recommendation of a distinguished counselor and psychologist, Prof. Rasaq Alaba Adenuga that government and employers of labour should extend the period of maternity leave to a minimum of one year to enable nursing mothers give exclusive breast feeding to their infants and focus on the early development of their children.

Prof. Adenuga who was delivering the 84th Inaugural Lecture of the University, 18th in the Faculty of Education and 5th in the Department of Educational Foundations and Counseling stated that government, as a matter of urgency and necessity, should employ Guidance Counselors to work in Nigerian’s health institutions and facilities so as to effectively handle cases related to psychological, emotional and sociological trauma.

The Inaugural Lecture entitled ”Managing the Managers:  The Counselors’ Mission”  took place in the auditorium  of the Otunba Gbenga Daniel Lecture Theatre, at the Main Campus of the University in Ago-Iwoye on Tuesday, 24th July, 2018.  Prof. Adenuga who is the current Dean of the Faculty of Education also advised that all organizations should have at least a counselor with a functional counseling centre to handle all cases related to job stress, frustration, employment and termination.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ganiyu Olatunde Olatunji was the Chairman of the occasion while in attendance were Provosts and Deans of Colleges and Faculties, Royal Fathers, distinguished scholars, government functionaries and Nigerians from all walks of life.
