The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), Prof. Adewale Okunuga, has commended Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye for its commitment to ensuring standards in affiliation and partnership programmes. He said the cooperation and support of the University Management had gone a long way in enhancing the success of the national examination body’s programme at the institution.
Prof. Okunuga gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde, on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. The Registrar, who was accompanied by some officials of JUPEB, expressed satisfaction with the activities of the University in the areas of teaching, research and service.
He stated that his visit to the University was informed by the need to assess the administration of JUPEB programme as well as the facilities on ground in the institution while also getting feedbacks from both students and tutors as regards the programme.
Speaking further, the JUPEB Registrar disclosed that there are currently over 91 Universities affiliated to the examination body and participating in its programme. This, he said, was an indication of the tremendous level of growth recorded since inception of the board.
He assured that the examination body will not relent in fulfilling its vision and mission of being outstanding in facilitating Direct Entry admissions into Nigerian and foreign-based partner Universities by conducting standard and credible examinations based on a qualitative and world-class curriculum for students.
Prof. Okunuga said, “We are here to assess the administration of the programme, check the facilities, discuss with the students and our tutors on the programme, give words of encouragement and let them know that it’s in their own interest to take JUPEB programme very seriously.
We know that OOU has been doing very well with affiliation and partnership with JUPEB and ensuring standards in the past and we want you to continue in that same manner. We also know that you have not let us down at anytime.”
He added, “We have come around to see things by ourselves and then write a report. That’s the simple mission we have. We have, for now, 91 Universities that are participating in JUPEB; it’s growing by the day. Recently, we had two other institutions intending to join from the eastern part of the country. The body is growing like that and it shows that we are not doing badly. But we must ensure that standards are maintained and that informed the efforts of trying to go round to see that things are put in place.”
“Usually in public Universities like state and federal Universities, we actually don’t usually have problems except if the Directors there are not doing what they’re supposed to do. And sometimes, the Vice-Chancellors there may not know. Therefore, we always want to give them information and let them know how things are supposed to be,” he explained.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde, appreciated the JUPEB Registrar and his team for the visit and pledged the continued support of the University for the examination board.
Olatunde, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Charles Adekoya, assured that the University would not detract from its quality academic standards as well as provision of enabling environment for moral and academic excellence. He explained that if not for the global outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, the facilities at the University’s Mini Campus would have been completely upgraded in furtherance of the commitment to creating conducive atmosphere for the institution’s part-time programmes.
“We are very happy that you have visited our institution. We not only impact knowledge in our students, we also teach to mould their character,” the Vice-Chancellor stated. “Our multi-campus University currently has three Colleges, 13 Faculties and 53 Departments with 75 academic programmes. Almost all of our programmes have accreditation, except for one that was denied accreditation. But everything has been put in place now and, soon, we should be able to have 100 percent accreditation for all our programmes”
The Vice-Chancellor, who informed his guests that OOU emerged one of the first Universities in the country to begin online teaching and learning in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, expressed the resolve of the University Management to adopt measures that would make tertiary education easier and more accessible.
JUPEB is a national examination body responsible for conducting examinations for candidates, who have undergone approved subject combinations and are seeking Direct Entry admissions into Nigerian and partnering foreign tertiary institutions. The body was approved by the Federal Government in December 2013 but was formally established in April 2014 by a consortium of ten partnering Universities.
