OOU HOSTS 2025 OLU ASEKUN NATIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION JUNE 2 TO 4

Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye has concluded arrangements to host the finals of the 2025 Olu Asekun National Moot Court Competition from Monday, 2nd to Wednesday, 4th June, 2025. The competition, featuring students from Faculties of Law across different Universities in Nigeria, is sponsored by an alumnus of the University, Dr. Olusegun Asekun, under the aegis of Olu and Simi Asekun Foundation.

The opening ceremony of the finals slated for Monday, 2nd June, will take place at the Olu Asekun Law Resource Centre, Faculty of Law, Main Campus, Ago-Iwoye, under the distinguished chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, while the Chief Judge of Ogun State, Hon. Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, will be the Special Guest of Honour at the event.

The quarter-finals hold on same day by 11:00am. The semi-finals will take place on Tuesday, 3rd June, while the Final as well as Book Launch and Award Ceremony will hold on Wednesday, 4th June, at 10:00am.

The teams participating in this competition emerged after a rigorous intellectual contest among 21 Faculties of Law in a qualifying rounds. It should be noted that the 21 Faculties of Law cut across all the six geopolitical zones of the country.

At the end of the qualifying rounds, eight (8) Faculties emerged as the best teams. They include Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State; University of Lagos, Akoka-Yaba, Pagos; Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State; and Prince Audu Abubakar University, Anyigba, Kogi State.

Others are OOU, Ago-Iwoye; Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State; Elizade University, Ilaramokin, Ondo State; and University of Benin, Benin, Edo State.

It will be recalled that the Olu Asekun National Moot Court Competition was the brainchild of Dr. Asekun, a successful legal practitioner and an alumnus of the University based in the United States of America.

As a committed alumnus, Dr. Asekun single-handedly donated a world-class building housing two fully equipped Moot Court Rooms complete with judges’ chambers and offices to the Faculty of Law. At the dedication of the building named, “Olu Asekun Law Resource Centre” which took place on the 21st of June, 2023, the donor expressed his desire for an annual nationwide moot court competition among law students to be hosted by the Faculty and sponsored by him.

At the maiden edition of the competition, held between 13th and 14th June, 2024, the Lagos State University emerged as the winner while Olabisi Onabanjo University followed as the 1st runner-up.

With preparations in top gear for the second edition of the competition, members of the University Community and the general public are hereby notified and invited to participate in the scheduled activities. Distinguished scholars, eminent personalities, law enthusiasts, staff and students are expected to grace the competition.
